I’ve always thought of them as “kill boxes” but that never set well with me and it didn’t seem quite right. CDY’s explanation fits much better with how I see it, with what I (think I) know, and makes more sense to me.

Brackets usually indicate object(s) of interest being tracked. Whether they get whacked depends on mission objectives. FWIW
