1) Halsey’s pursuit of the Japanese decoy left the our Leyte invasion force open to attack.

2) On Dec 17, a typhoon destroyed 3 Third Fleet destroyers with 790 sailors and 146 aircraft lost.

Nimitz saved Halsey from being cashiered.

A couple of notes: my father was in the Navy, enlisted in 1944 while still in High School. He was training for the invasion of Japan. Somewhat selfishly, I'm glad Truman dropped the bombs. IMO, Truman would have been impeached had he not done so, and the invasion of Japan extended the war by months, and millions of American lives.

In the lead up to the proposed invasion, the War Department placed an order for 500,000 Purple Hearts. 76 years later, that supply has yet to be exhausted.

Years ago at the beginning of the Iraq War by the first Bush, we went to a luncheon in Omaha that featured SACs General Stancil Dilda. They were supposed to have a live broadcast from Looking Glass, a flying communications system.

General Dilda (Google him) said there were operations going on so we couldn’t hear what was going on with LG and instead, the general instead would answer any questions. Keep in mind he was the head of computer operations at Offutt and he was speaking to a bunch of computer folks.

Guy in the audience asked the general, if you were in charge, how would you run the Iraq operations. Without hesitation he replied if it were up to him, it would be taken care of in a couple hours with little or no risk to American servicemen.

The person who asked the question and the rest of the audience assumed that he was inferring the use of nuclear weapons and asked if that’s what he was implying.

He said again, if it were up to him, the issue would be addressed in a couple hours and no American lives would be risked — next question.

I had a buddy stationed at Offutt and told him the story & how surprised I was at the answer. He asked me if I would rather have people in those positions who have to be able to accept & execute difficult orders.

No. It was not a typo. It really did take that long for a military study to prompt political decision from an ossified group of men.

Oh absolutely.
Some seem to think they did no wrong and that “we” are the guilty culprits in that war.

Not the elders though I.E. those that lived through it, etc.

Another way I shut them up was, “You just take a trip to Normandy and visit the American cemetary there and tell me we should not have ended that war the way we did.”

The famous insubordination incident involving MacArthur, which ended with Truman relieving him, was in the Korean War, not WW2. I am not sure if you are referring to an earlier incident or what.

Thanks. It looks like a good source to me. I listened to it then added it to my bibliography. I remember the complexity of those discussions from several of my books. I abbreviated the process for the essay or it could have been a lot longer than 3,300 words.
