A couple of notes: my father was in the Navy, enlisted in 1944 while still in High School. He was training for the invasion of Japan. Somewhat selfishly, I'm glad Truman dropped the bombs. IMO, Truman would have been impeached had he not done so, and the invasion of Japan extended the war by months, and millions of American lives.
In the lead up to the proposed invasion, the War Department placed an order for 500,000 Purple Hearts. 76 years later, that supply has yet to be exhausted.

I feel the same way. My father had just finished Navy boot camp when the first bomb had dropped. A month later he was on a ship clearing mines in Japanese waters.
