I’m trying to figure out how Pelosi or McCarthy would end up being Harris’s VP.

I’m thinking back to Richard Nixon. When he resigned and Gerald Ford became the President, Carl Albert was Speaker of the House (yeah, never heard of him either). Ford picked Nelson Rockefeller to be his VP.

I think the list of succession is only for when both the President and VP are taken out at the same time.

“Ford picked Nelson Rockefeller to be his VP.”

I have some memory of that.

“How did Ford choose a VP?
On August 20, 1974, Ford nominated Nelson Rockefeller, the leader of the party’s liberal wing, for the vice presidency. ... Although conservative Republicans were not pleased that Rockefeller was picked, most of them voted for his confirmation, and his nomination passed both the House and Senate.”

“On January 26, 1979, at 12:20 AM, former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller died from a heart attack while sitting at his desk at Rockefeller Center, working on a book about his personal art collection.

At least, that was what the papers said.

In reality, on January 26, 1979, at 12:20 AM, former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller died from a heart attack while flat on his back and shoeless, in a secret apartment with Megan Marshack, a woman almost 50 years his junior.”

Rockefeller’s wife, “HAPPY” wasn’t to happy when this all came out.
