PS: I am not familiar with the Jefferson letter you reference, but I am puzzles as to why it would say “what country can preserve it’s liberties”. The contraction “it’s” stands for “it is”; the 3rd person neuter singular possessive pronoun is “its”.

Here’s a copy of Thomas Jefferson’s letter to William Smith. If you enlarge it, it does say “it’s”.. mebee he made a mistake?
