I'm surprised the water table there would allow for basements. Were they partly above ground?

I never saw a basement when we lived in Florida from 1957 to 1969. We were minutes from the beach. The house Dad had built in Coconut Creek (Margate) was concrete block on terrazzo floors. When we moved back to TN in 1969 I was fascinated with basements and old cellars.
