COVID vaccines developed quickly — is a vaccine for HIV next?

It is a search that has so far eluded scientists for 40 years: Finding a safe and effective vaccine to protect people from HIV.

Not a single HIV vaccine has made it beyond Phase III clinical testing in 37 years of research. In comparison to COVID-19, that timeline seems baffling.

Over the last 18 months, more than 32 COVID vaccines have made it to Phase III clinical trials, eight have so far been approved and manufactured, and another 90 are in the Phase I and II pipeline.

“When there’s the political will, there is funding and resources,” said Hendrik Streeck, virologist and director of the German Center of HIV & AIDS. “And that means there’s the ability to be much faster,” he told DW. […]

Unlike SARS-CoV-2, which is a very stable virus, the human immunosuppressive virus (HIV) is extremely variable — it’s constantly mutating. That makes it very difficult for HIV-infected people’s immune systems to make the right antibodies to fend off the virus, as it’s usually a step ahead of any response in the body. There are thousands upon thousands of HIV strains circulating in the global population. The HIV genome also integrates into the body’s DNA, effectively making itself invisible to the immune system.

These characteristics mean our bodies don’t usually mount an effective immune response to HIV.

They also make it very difficult to design a broadly effective vaccine. …

Wow. Sounds like you’ve really thought this one over.

Such a narrow isolated view point. Obviously you have limited real world experience.

What about the faithful wife who contracts HIV from her cheating husband?

She’s not innocent?

Or the Health Care worker?

I had a major exposure at work and had to stay away from my wife until my test and the patient I was exposed to got test results back.

It was quite a messy scene and I got blood all over on me including my face and eyes.

But Health Care workers aren’t innocent?

What about the cop, or janitor or health care worker that accidentally gets poked with a hot needle?

They’re all guilty according to you?

HIV is contagious……..one doesn’t need to engage in homosexual sex to become infected.

Innocent people contract HIV.

They’re not all homosexuals having anal sex.

HIV/AIDS is a "gay"-centric disease by any measure.

Almost exclusively:
- men contract it from other men sexually
- women contract it from men who have sex with men or inject recreational drugs
- men and women contract it from recreational injection drug use, usually with other men who have sex with men
- The number of people who contract HIV from any other transmission vector is so small as to be insignificant

More robust testing of the blood supply guarantees almost no one is going to be infected innocently through a transfusion... for now. If homosexuals get their way by dropping ALL restrictions to them donating blood, that may change.
