Moïse’s death and the lack of a functioning government also serves as a clear cut signal that the U.S. must play a greater role in Haiti’s future, starting right now.
It’s clear that Haiti will need both immediate and longer-term guidance to move forward in a democratic way. This is a country that started out with weak institutions, and they’re now virtually non-existent. The U.S., as Haiti’s biggest donor, has no choice but to take the lead — with international partners and, importantly, Haiti’s own civil society — to stabilize Haiti.
An international coalition could do immense good very quickly by picking five critical things to focus on so that basic life in Haiti can continue: good roads, reliable electricity, clean water, policing that works and COVID vaccines...
U.S. must also drop the idea of elections in two months. The Biden administration had pinned its hopes on “free and fair” elections, refusing to take into consideration the amount of turmoil in Haiti was going to make that very hard time to pull off.
Transition governments have worked in the past. That’s the best path forward now. Elections must be reset for a date that allows Haiti time to get its footing. Rushing into an election now will only result in more chaos — and an electorate that doesn’t believe in the results.

Send any Democratic Mayor in the US over there, I am sure they will fix everything ASAP, just as they have fixed every large US city!

But, no US taxpayer funds sorry!
Maybe. But it sounds like their call, not ours. Maybe the generals will step forward for a while, but again, not our business.
Last time they did that, Clinton sent in US troops to put a nutjob in power. Let them pick their own nutjobs.
I’m sure the Biden solution will be to import the entire population of Haiti into the United States.
“We have to get these people in.”
Sean Penn, too.
Guess Chelsea needs a new dress.
I am sorry, but that was flat our racist. Being black doesn’t automatically make you a commmie. They simply need to be taught about capitalism.
Good point.
I’ve met quite a few Hatians, going back to the mid 70s. I have found the overhelming majority of them to be nasty, entitled and generally disagreeable people who were not shy about telling me how much they hate the US. I don’t give a rat’s a$$ about Haiti or Haitians and their problems. My only wish with regard to that country is that we STOP wasting so much $$$ on them.
“Yankee Go Home!”
Didn’t the shooters say they were from the DEA? Although they may have been lying the evidence so far suggests that the US already “got off the sidelines”.
Chuckle… “The Biden administration pinned it helps on free and fair elections”… Does anybody else get the irony of that but me?
That demented douchebag Wouldn’t know a free and fair election if it bit him in the ass…
I know, let’s just make it a state!!
Haiti will just be Haiti. Elections won’t save it, nor will our money. The only thing we should be concerned about is keeping the communists out, and that means the Cubans. And that’s it. It needs a powerful dictator than can stay in control, ala Papa Doc.
Haiti’s entire history is the aftermath of a race war and 200 years of dealing with the consequences of it. That country cannot be fixed and its not our problem.
My instant assumption is that he was killed so that this could be done, and the past securely covered up.
Don’t give them any ideas.
Hi.
Is the Tonton Macoute still around. They kept Baby Doc and his wife in power.
5.56mm
bingo
perhpas we stepback and let other countries deal with their own problems
either way we get hatred
do something, we are interfering and empire building
do nothing anc we are heartless and dont care
at least with the latter we dont waste money and american lives
