So I read the thread about the person that got killed by a bear while out camping.
Reminds me of the time I was about 8 years old and we were camping in Yellowstone National Park.
I had gone to take a shower, and after getting dressed, I opened the bathroom door to go outside and return to our camper. Smack dab right there before me in all it’s scary magnificence was a huge bear.
Slammed that door fast and screamed. No one heard me. Finally after almost an hour, I hear my mom calling my name. I hollered and told her there was a bear outside the door.
A whole bunch of campers got pots, pans, and spoons and and made all sorts of noise as the approached from several directions - leaving a clear avenue of escape for the bear.
The bear rambled off, not very fast - so I don’t think it was really scared. At any rate, it was scary, and I sure had trouble trying to go to sleep.
We heard all sorts of stories about stupid people doing stupid stuff. Like the woman that put her kid on a bear’s back to take a picture... SMH.

Those close encounters are not forgotten and that one sounds a little too close for comfort.

My parents lived in northern British Columbia for many years. One day they got back from running errands to find a bear trying to break in through their front door. Dad runs around to the back door to get a gun, then comes back and shoots the bear right through the chest.
He goes around through the back door again to get a camera to record his triumph. As he gets close to the bear, Mom says, "Get away from that bear!" He continues on to get a better photo. Again, Mom says, "Get away from that bear!" He takes another step, and the bear jumps up and, fortunately, runs into the woods near their house.
Apparently bears have extraordinary amounts of internal fat, so the bullet hit mainly hit fat on its passage through the body. With highly visible entry and exit wounds, the bear stuck around for three weeks until it was sufficiently healed to take off.
My brother and I were musing about how negative our wives were compared to our invariably optimistic selves. Reflecting on this story we thought that, all in all, that might be a good thing.
