Fir trees around here don't look like that at all, maybe another variety? Lemme find photos. Hmm, now I'm finding there are about 6 or 7 kinds of fir in OR but the main one where I live is Douglas, but we have the Grand or True fir as well. I've seen both on our property.

And now I'm finding that Douglas fir isn't a "real" fir so ...at a loss as to whether it has the good stuff or not. I'll keep looking. Good idea for people to see what kinds of fir or pine or whatever trees that have the good stuff are in their area. Tree identification sites have good photos of bark, needles, cones etc.

My husband (has forestry degree) has always told me that doug fir is really a false hemlock but loosely in the pine family. I did find this:
