My husband (has forestry degree) has always told me that doug fir is really a false hemlock but loosely in the pine family. I did find this:

Thank you. I learned a lot online yesterday but now more confused... I’ve made tea from doug fir needles and didn’t die or feel weird. We have the true fir and one other, don’t know what kind. Many trees are too tall to get their needles though.
Aha, reading link, thank you! So they are actually Pine family! Funny, as they look nothing like pines, needles are like other firs, and wood is not at all like pine wood either. Who figures out these things, anyway?
