Believe it or not, Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) currently employs more software engineers than mechanical engineers. How is this possible? The farming industry is experiencing significant disruption. Innovative technology is enabling what is called "precision agriculture" to come to fruition. Farmers are able to leverage technology to monitor their crops in ways that were once unfathomable. John Deere's next-generation machines use artificial intelligence (AI) to exponentially increase efficiencies, enabling farmers to reap increased crop yields with less work and lower costs.
Deere does not manufacture electric vehicles like Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), but you may be surprised to hear it is working on autonomous electric tractors, semiautonomous tractors, autonomous drone sprayers, and much more. Is John Deere the Tesla of agriculture?
In July 2020 John Deere hired Jahmy Hindman as the company's first chief technology officer in its 184-year history. Did that number surprise you? That's right, John Deere was founded in 1837. Hindman leads Deere's Intelligent Solutions Group, and his role is responsible for building out the company's tech stack, which includes connectivity, embedded software, data platforms, and applications.

John Deere has no mower blades anywhere in its company to fit our late model John Deere riding mower. Further, if they had the blades in stock, the local dealer said they could not change the blades on our mower for at least two months.
We got some recent Mexican-arrival auto mechanics to remove our blades, sharpen them and re-install them while we waited.
John Deere is no “marvel of modern technology.” The company has become a joke.

This gives evidence that is the exact opposite of the headline. JD is a very successful company, but they waited to last year to hire a CTO?
Big old companies are hard to change. I would be more interested in finding some new companies that can move faster and take a slice of the multibillion dollar industry away from Deere.
From experience I say stay away from John Deere residential products; their lawn tractors and ATV’s are poorly designed and expensive to maintain.
Their commercial equipment must be good; they have a huge following for some reason.
John Deere will not sell manuals to repair their large equipment so a person has to take equipment back to them for repair. This is a very expensive practice. Some have bought pirated manuals form eastern Europe.
Would you want to invest in this company.

John Deere residential products are completely different than the commercial products. Cheap Chinese crap with an expensive nameplate.
According to my friend who bought one. Then got rid of it.
My genius farmer friends in Australia are big fans of John Deere.
However, they are willing to buy from whatever source meets there exacting needs, at the best price!
Deeres residential equip is thin gage metal and plastic junk.
In my old dairy town the industrial farm equip was everywhere so they must be doing something correct in that regard.
I loved by Kubota BX25 for my plot and started seeing more orange in the region along with the local industrial farming tractor dealer at one time having acres of Ford Blue equip everywhere was taken over by Kubota Orange.No Deere

Farm implements tend to be built to last, autos not so much. The pre-WWII tractor my dad bought (used) when I was a little kid did a lot of service (mostly as a mower), and at least 25 years ago he sold it to a broker, then 10 or more years ago it showed up for sale about 12 miles from here, in a large, large yard in a posh area, and since sold it is probably still in service somewhere.
The John Deeres also last a really long time. All such equipment has to be properly maintained of course, but it won't be surprising when the older ones around now enter their second century of service. :^)
Hard to sell new ones except in a growing (sorry) market -- such as China, which started mechanization of its agriculture at least 60 years after the US did.
Genius farmers? Hey, I thought FR was the genius farm... ;^)
If I see another IC chip it will be too soon.

Hard to sell new ones**
The old ones last WAY longer than the new ones BECAUSE the new ones are loaded with electronics. The maintenance you refer to is vastly in addition to the maintenance needed before the electronics were added.
John Deere is a great company. They will lead farming technology and it won’t even be close.
The patriarch, Roy Eykamp, was my friend. He died at 102 years old.
I talked to one of his sons, Curtis, who I met in Yuma, and who remains a close friend.
I asked if he designed complex pieces of farm machinery, in his head, without plans, then would go out and build it from scrap, without anything on paper.
He said, why yes. Doesn't everyone do that?
It seems the whole family had that ability.
Kubota diesel for the win. It’s what I’m looking to buy now. I have a kubota zero turn ...just need the tractor now to replace my 70 year old 8n who has seen better days.
