The Most COMPLEX Pop Song of All Time

In this video, Rick Beato analyzes the song "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Sergio Mendez, pointing out the twists and turns of its super complicated chord progression. The song was released in 1983 and he's using it to illustrate the loss of complexity in modern pop songs, a theme he's been working for the past few months.

At LEAST 5. I don’t think he can get it down to 4.
I’m not sure it’sthe rum...it’s probably vapors of the purple ink from the mimeo machine that is eating away at the rummy’s brain.

My wife likes country and I always joke with her. After a song’s been playing for a minute, I ask, “What’s the name of this song?” They’ve already repeated the cliche title of the song 20 times by then. You should play for her the quintessential country parody, so good most country fans never realize it's a parody:

Ron: Well, whattya got here, y'know, you got "Don Ho: Live At Honolulu", you got "Jerry Vale Sings Italian Love Songs" you got Sergio Mendes, now come on...
Kramer: Wait, wait, wait... Sergio Mendes has a cult following.
Newman: They follow him like a cult.
Kramer: He can't even walk down the street in South America...
Ron: Look, that's his problem, alright? Now you don't like it, too bad.

Using dynamics, tempo changes, instrumental solos, etc., Paul Whiteman waxed some sophisticated discs that were very pleasing to the ear.Let's be fair: practically anything from the post-Cohan Broadway era is more complex than practically anything from the 21st century pop-[c]rap music industry, and that includes Inka Dinka Doo, Celery Stalks at Midnight, and Open The Door, Richard, much less practically anything by Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Lerner/Lowe, or Rodgers/Hammerstein--or the two best students of Darius Milhaud, Brubeck and Bacharach.

Yeah, I’m gonna have to mix that into a playlist and see if she catches it. She’s pretty sharp so she probably will. She played in marching band when she was in HS.

One of the comments; Listened to a couple dozen times, and I’m beginning to suspect he just ran out of gas.

Is it really any more complex that, say, The Beatles’ A Day in the Life or The Beach Boys’ God Only Knows?

Watched this the other day. I remember this song when it was popular, but I didn’t give it a lot of thought then.

I am not a big fan of modern Country, but that sure brought a tear to mah eye!
Incidently, when I moved back to MA from FL to take care of Mom, I had nothing but the clothes on my back, mah car, mah harley, mah guitar, mah bass, and mah dawg.
I’m sure I could write a Country song about THAT! :-0

That is really cool. It’s the kind of jazzy progressions I’m working on these days.
