IKEA in Atlanta is under fire after its management team devised a 'racially insensitive' menu for Juneteenth which featured fried chicken and watermelon.
Bosses purportedly sent out the menu to employees in an email last Friday, saying they wanted to serve the foods to customers as a way to 'honor' the federal holiday.
However, the management team - which allegedly featured no black employees - failed to realize that many of the food items have been derogatorily associated with black Americans for more than a century.
According to NPR, both fried chicken and watermelon were common foods fed to slaves in the South, and have been 'a mainstay in racist depictions of black Americans' ever since they featured in the 1915 film Birth of A Nation.

They left out Malt Liquor.
Should be lined up against a wall and beat with raw chickens and watermelon...
Throw some grits in them too!!!
Well, fried chicken and watermelon are both common food items during the summer. I’ve had both within the last two days.
so when they offer chicken parm or lasagna on a Christopher Columbus menu should italian get offended?? How about corned beef on St Pats- should the irish get in an uproar?
Did the menu items sell?
If White people enjoy soul food that’s CULTURAL APPROPRIATION. If Whites don’t eat soul food, THAT’S RACIST! The hustle never ends with the woke scumbags
sorry, okra should be added.
then we are getting close to a really wonderful menu
i’d say oysters, to honor those freedmen who farmed oysters off the coast of georgia....but that’s a little nichey and less universal
here’s the real travesty
food culture is awesome, and important
the foods shown in this menu have some historical justification, and if you were to research each of them, you’d see why
but the romance of history, culture and people (not to mention the slow march to liberty) is entirely lost on the petty, hell-bent political/emotional spectacle farce that we live in today
What?
No chitlins or fatback?
Pffft.
First of all, go to any black gathering in the greater south and yes you will find fried chicken and watermelon.
Second of all if anyone offers you such food, and it angers you, YOU are the problem.
Third, did Dan Quayle write that menu?
Other, um, groups would be delighted to, er, appropriate that.
*Pone
In the US NAVY for as long as I was in, during MLK day, was Fried Chicken, Black Eye Peas, Sweet Potato Pie, greens and yes, watermelon.
Everyone enjoyed that good meal at sea!
Only if they forget the whisky!
Got married in Texas on Juneteenth half a century ago. We cut a watermelon. I guess we wuz racis and didn’t even know it.
I like fried chicken also but I gotta go easy on fried stuff. I do love watermelo also
actually, for parts of the deep south, especially GA and MS, I think grits and beef liver for breakfast would be a wonderful touch to celebrate these hard working people and their livelihoods!
The person who prepared/designed this e-mail should at least have checked the proper spelling of “potato salad”-that shows being clueless more than any imaginary offense over the menu items...
