The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Joe Biden for his signature. […]
“Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “But we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution.”
The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements. …

The Native Americans Who Owned Slaves
Ah, don't worry, thanks to Marxist white teachers, they will never find out!
How about #12: Dindu Nuffin Day? It can be on Michael Brown's b-day. Or Trayvons's. Or....
As long as they're adding federal holidays, let's give back one in February so Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday can be properly celebrated again. Oh wait, I guess because they were white guys, no such luck.
/laughs in Maryland
Are the banks gonna be closed for this?
Great, just great.
Why don’t they make Saint George Floyd’s, Saint Michael Brown’s and Saint Trayvon Martin’s birthdays federal holidays while they are at it.
He was heard to say, "I'll have those n's voting democrat for the NEXT two hundred years".
Then his caretaker Jill led him to his room to go down for a nice nappy nap.
Yes. It really happened. Don't you dare question me.
If you are really going to celebrate the end of slavery, the date to celebrate is December 6, not June 19. December 6th, 1865 is the date of the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery.
Slavery continued to exist, and was legal, in the four border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware), as well as West Virginia and parts of Louisiana for almost six months after June 19, 1865.
June 19th is only relevant in southern Texas.
Well I’m not celebrating it until all our Holidays are acceptable....and our statues put back in place.
They can return our statues and Columbus Day and then I’ll think about this....until then no deal.
Unfortunately the END of Slavery is not what’s at the heart of this happening now.
This was the day when Republicans sent troops to stop Democrats from gas lighting black people. When the current crop of Democrats realize this, the holiday will be banned as being racist.
If I were king if the forest...
Independence day, Veterans day, Memorial day.
Ok... and New Years Day.
That’s it. Thats all the fed holidays we need.
As for Thanksgiving and Christmas and any other religious holiday... take a vacation day that’s what those days are for.
Everything else is a waste of taxpayers money.
I firmly believe this, given the constraints of the modern and complex American society we live in these days.
Probably. Would not surprise me if there are annual “celebrations” with “memorial riots”.
This isn’t what Juneteenth means, certainly on a national level.
Ask Joe Biden why Delaware kept their slaves until December 1865.
But they won't because today's Republicans are dem light.
More kowtowing. The whole month of February wasn’t enough.
The Juneteenth Day is embarrassingly racist.
It actually sounds like something from a black-face minstrel show - you know where white people joke about how black people don't have the capacity to count to the number 19.
I'm sure that even in the olden days black people could count to 19.
