Back in the 60s, dad did a lot of hiring for the advanced spacecraft projects he led. I fondly remember him saying that most PhDs he interviewed “didn’t know which end of a hammer to pick up.”

A pity FR lacks an upvote feature. I’d upvote and 5 star this in a red hot minute.

One company I worked for had an explicit “no Ivy or Stanford” hiring clause.

To much cost, disruption, and loss.

I’m in a career that attracts Ivy Leaguers and I’ve worked with many of them. Of the three most talented people I’ve worked with, two were graduates of the University of Maryland and the third did not finish high school.

Same.

I could tell stories of engineers from an elite school who assumed that “little people” would do the actual work.

One left crying when I asked him to climb up on the platform to observe the process we were working on. Seemed he had no idea that a job in a plant would require going into the plant.

Another intern wanted a housing allowance (which we would help with), a clothing allowance (We had uniforms) and a driver....

You're not going to get an amateur radio license without knowing basic stuff like that. And wasn't it Robert Heinlein who said,

"The three legged stool of understanding is composed of languages, math and history. Equipped with these, you can learn anything you want to learn. Without any one of them, you're an ignorant peasant with dung on your boots."

They spend their time learning the “why” of complex formulas and developing a thesis about some micro-nano sub topic that doesn’t apply to 99.9% of actual work needs.

The best engineers for daily engineering aren’t PhD’s.

I think those arrows are sexist. Imagine, a device can only go one way?

The metropolitan elites and wannabes are like the Eloi, from The Time Machine, and the rest of us are Morlocks, doing the dirty work.

Many moons ago, when I was an undergrad, I was struggling in Organic chem.

My teacher was a lovely woman who had helped develop synthetic rubber.

I was in her office working on a problem and wondering if my choice of degree was wrong. The prof went to her shelf and pulled down a quote for a pump she needed for her research. On the quote was a pump curve. Doc said “Red, I need to move X at Y pressure. What pump do I need?” I read the curve and speced the pump.

Doc then said “I have a few PhD’s, done ground breaking research, but I can not understand a pump curve. You did that as an after thought. You are an engineer, don’t worry if you can’t draw the correct stereochemistry.”

Different skill sets.

So true.

I used to date a guy who was a Harvard grad. He was an out-of-touch snob and also, absent minded!

White? Automatically assumed to be racist - prove you're not. President Trump supporter? Automatically assumed to be fascist - prove you're not.

Science 101: You cannot prove a negative.

US Government 101: The burden of proof is on the accuser to prove the accused's guilt, not on the accused to prove his/her innocence. IOW innocent until proven guilty.

The wokesters' ignorance of basic science and civics is showing.

How you could pass electronics 101 is a mystery to me. Diodes, capacitors, coils, resistors, and crystals are the basic building blocks of electronics before you even get to solid state switching. I’m no electronics wiz but this is all stuff I learned on my own in middle school. How one advances to the Phd level without some basic knowledge of how the “angry pixies” dance is a sad commentary of our educational process. I’m sure however this particular candidate pulled a 4.0 in underwater basket weaving, and race grievance theory.
