“Personally, I think we are just scratching the surface on a real understanding of quantum physics.”
What occurs to me is that they will chase this (and perhaps already have) to the point where it is impossible for a human to imagine the constructs.
I somewhat followed the article but I have only a casual interest and have not studied physics in depth for many years. I actually don’t think it is possible for humans to really understand how the universe works. But I salute them for trying and nibbling at the edges of understanding.
We can not even understand infinity or gravity yet we know it exist.

I agree. Some scientist/philosophers have concluded that further exploration reveals only increasing complexity - far more new questions than answers to the old ones.
Better microscopes will reveal finer elements, etc..
And yet they still froth at the thought of “in the beginning the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY created the heavens and the earth, and said ‘light, be”.” But have no trouble with the philosophy of naturalism, e.g. “ the universe sprang into existence because it had to” (some dead dude), in direct opposition of all logic and observation.
The heavens declare the glory of God(even if rejected by smart observer/philosophers).
I think God made it complex IOT separate the believer from the “ let us assume(er).
