An investigation is underway after hikers noticed nearly 100 trees on a public trail were cut down illegally.
“There is dead limbs everywhere and these trees– some of them will not survive. Some will, but some of them won’t. It’s not right,” said hiker Kay Sanders.
Sanders said she has hiked the Ouachita National Recreation Trail in Arkansas for 30 years and was devastated to see the damage done last week.
“You don’t have the right to do this. No one has the right to do this,” said Sanders.
82-year-old woman to lose her California home after she’s told she owes $38K in HOA fees According to the Pulaski County Sherriff’s Office, a hiker saw six men taking chainsaws to trees on the Ouachita Trail last week.
Central Arkansas Water, which owns the land through which the portion of the trail runs, says a homeowner whose property backs up to the trail contracted the work to be done.
“We don’t take things like this lightly. The tops of the trees look like something out of the Lorax,” said Raven Lawson, with Central Arkansas Water.
Lawson said she has received around 50 emails and dozens of phone calls from hikers upset about the damage.
She said they believe 100 trees were either cut down illegally or had the tops of them shaved off because the homeowner wanted to view Lake Maumelle, which was blocked by the trees.
“The view to the lake could definitely be increased. The view to Pinnacle Mountain could be increased. There’s definitely a lot of nature that could produce million-dollar views out here,” said Lawson.

The 2 red ones.
Serious? My guess it was God many, many years ago when there was no thought of that area being cleared for housing. Of course I might be wrong.........LOL!
Idiot kalifornians. Our guide said now they're suffering erosion and soil and debris now being washed into the water.
Put up a wind power generator and show them what an eyesore really looks like.
“Tree trimmers came out, took one look and told him they wouldn’t do it - apparently they’re some kind of “ancient” oaks and protected.”
Craigslist. Guys on there will cut anything.
Too bad there is water in your neighbor’s fuel …

Is the $25K is just for the tree, or does it include moving, crane, loader, labor, and planting?
A company I worked for years ago had nice 30 foot birches up for auction at $25 each but no one wanted them because moving costs would get the price up to $1000 per tree - and that was on level ground with convenient highways and roads.
Yes it was. It was just long enough ago that I needed to look it up (in the interest of accuracy).
This link recounts the conclusion of the incident: https://www.seattlemet.com/news-and-city-life/2018/02/city-settles-with-west-seattle-homeowners-over-cutting-public-trees
It was more than a single homeowner who cut trees on public-owned land. And it looks like the final price tag was closer to $800k
Treble damages for illegal stumpage, at least in this state. That could run into some serious money.
Perfect combination for disaster a stupid, self-centered, greedy person. I hope Central Arkansas Water soon owns a house to tear down.
What an idiot.
Unless they’re illegals (which would make sense since a reputable tree service would refuse) then no harm no foul.
I have ways to deal with people like that.
I’ve seen topped trees on one of those Alaska frontier shows. And I don’t understand the thinking. Topped trees will die because their circulatory system has been sliced off interrupting nutrient flow. So why not take the whole thing down? Not that the homeowner had any right to do anything off his property.
It would have been cheaper for the homeowner to lift his foundation and build another story or two if he needed a view.
We have the same situation.
Probably not a million dollar view improvement if the tress were cut, but truly a very significant amount.
The picture shows some long-term “trimming”; finally, somebody noticed!
They weren’t their trees. Dolt
Waaaaaa!!!!! Someone topped a few trees.
*************
Yep and they are going to be wishing they were topping some
other item that they owned. Bet they have now learned a lesson
about property rights and legal consequences.
“Dolt”
Classy...
I'd prefer the trees to look at as to what they now have.
