I am of the opinion that dogs, being domesticated, throw a monkey wrench into the 'law of the jungle'.
They are artificially in place by the hand of man. Their counterpart in the natural world are wolves, foxes, and coyotes (and dingoes, who eat babies).
Dogs are humans with four legs, in the grand scheme of things.
Mother nature knows this.
And as has previously been discussed, cats are from the underworld.

Some would say that domesticability is the grand adaptation and success story of the feline and canine communities.
