Nowadays in fill in “other”. That drives them really crazy. Apparently, I am as Black as Elisabeth Warren is Cherokee, less than 0.001%. So maybe, I should fill in Black?
Move to Mexico and call yourself an American Mexican.
They will laugh you out of the country.
As far as the purpose of asking racial identification goes, just remember, the last government that classified people by race eventually ended up sending a few races to the gas chambers.
Just for fun I'll say "I'm not a racist but I'd love to be one. Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and the tragic Earnhardt were some of the greatest racists a Southern boy could hope to follow."
Then I would have asked her a follow up - if box was checked “white”, would she still discard the application? If she said “no”, I would want to know “why” whether filling out the box made such a distinction?
I presume she saw your application, recalled your conversation with her, you got an interview and the job. (Don’t leave me hanging in suspense here General! LOL).
They wanted a “highly compensated” black because getting one would have greatly enhanced the bonuses for the top leadership. I don’t recall the exact contract wording, it’s not that blatant should someone actually read the fine print who was not in on the scheme. I think that it’s something like, “bonuses and award fees are x% based on compliance with EEOC* policy directive xyz.” Turns out they had hired me as a contractor because the job had to be done now, but it was the only open requisition for a “highly compensated” employee and they would not have hired me because I was melanin deficient. When the navy cancelled the contract I managed to upsell the navy on an additional half million dollars for an updated technical data package. When the navy said it couldn’t fund that much, I went into their funding documents from prior years and found permission and a link to where they funds could be had. Did I even get a thank you? No.
* Equal opportunity does not mean equal. It means enhanced opportunity if you have sufficient melanin. This has, in my experience, led to some very poor performing employees who can’t be laid off, or, even disciplined when they break the rules. That’s not to say I haven’t worked with some really decent black employees. But they are in such short supply and such high demand, they don’t tend to stay long before they get enticed away by a competitor.
