LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday that his barn has been told Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a postrace drug test, the latest doping scandal for horse racing and arguably the sport’s premier trainer.

Flanked by his attorney Craig Robertson in a morning news conference at Churchill Downs on Sunday, Baffert said Medina Spirit was found to have 21 picograms of the steroid betamethasone, double the legal threshold in Kentucky racing, in a postrace sample.

How do you determine the body volume of a horse? The only way I can think of is to immerse the horse in water and see how much water is displaced. There would be a significant difference between the horse in an exhaled state vs. the horse in an inhaled state.

A more likely measurement is picograms per liter of blood or picograms per kilogram (mass of the horse).

It doesn’t say picograms per what. Likely a milliliter. Still seemingly trivial, but they account for metabolism.

"Question: does suspending the trainer mean the horse can’t run?"

No, to keep Medina Spirit from running, Pimlico and NYRA would have to do what Churchill has done, which is Baffert is 'ruled off' the grounds, meaning he can't even run at Churchill in his assistant trainer's names and his horses must vacate the grounds.

Apparently whoever didn't fly back to SoCal last weekend will be vanned to Pimlico tomorrow with Baffert's Medina Spirit and Concert Tour.

This story reminds me of A VIEW TO A KILL...

Max Zorin (Christopher Walken) puts microchips in his horses...During the race, he activates the microchip...The steroid is injected into the horse when that happens...His horse wins the race...Agent 007 (Roger Moore) finds out that secret...

Just because an instrument detects\ dimethyl chicken wire at a quadrillionth part per zillion doesn’t mean it’s actually there.

“Do the exacta winners have to repay their winnings?”

More importantly, do the “losers” get compensation? I know someone would have won thousands with that horse out of the money.

Short answer: no.

I agree with you...but why does this seem to always happen to the same guy?

I’m willing to believe in the possibility of sabotage. But if so, some very, very wealthy person with signficant logistical resources must really hate him.

This is nothing to be laughed at. Poor horse. Inject the owners and jockey and get them addicted.

The horse is owned by a Saudi, Amr Zedan. It's possible that whatever veterinarian tends to the horse that he was given instructions by Zedan to administer the drug without Baffert knowing about it.

Some of those drugs are legal but have to be administered a certain number of days before a race.

"The withdrawal guidelines published by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission recommend that the medication not be given within 14 days of a race. In this instance, as an additional layer of protection, Gamine's veterinarian last treated her with betamethasone 18 days before the Oaks."

He should have practiced keeping a safe social distance from the other horses like Secretariat in the 73 Belmont.

I re-watch that race about once/year. Will there ever be such a dominant performance?

Drug tests are racist.

Horses are probably racist, too.
