The fossilized bones include skulls, skull fragments, two teeth and other bone fragments but no traces of cotton or other fibers indicating the presence of face masks. As these Neanderthals are believed to date from 50,000-68,000 years ago, the Culture Ministry speculated that the remains are related to the mass die off that followed the Neanderthals' relaxation of mask requirements on the Apennine Peninsula in 66,000 BC.
