Back in 1958, the military came out of the barracks to end the Fourth Republic and place Charles de Gaulle in charge of the new Fifth Republic. The problems of the Fourth were many, but the inflation of the franc was a major headache.
The biggest threat to the Fifth Republic came in 1968 when France's students decided to create a Sixth Republic using Mao and the Cultural Revolution as their model. Had the trade unionists joined the students, there would have been a major threat, but the unionists turned up their noses at the students. As a result, the gendarmerie was able to handle the problem with dispatch.
Back in 1968 the threat to the Fifth came from the Left. This time it comes from the Right.
