What speed to get for USB wifi adapter for laptop and desktop computers
ebay ^ | April 11th | Moi

Posted on 04/11/2021 7:42:16 AM PDT by dennisw

I want to buy two usb wifi adapters for laptop and desktop computers. I see speeds listed as-- 300mbs 600mbs 1200mbs

At most my speed from Xfinity is 70mbs via ethernet cable.... Why would I need anything faster than one that is rated at 300mbs and is less expensive. Of course get one with a little antennae sticking out. Do not need dual band I looked all over the internet and could not find any guidance on the speed I need.

Plus I think the slower speed ones is more generic and proven technology. Will buy at eBay, the prices at Amazon are idiotic. These things are generic.

Thanks Freepers!

Instead of the lectures about buying a new computer and Ethernet speeds, Has anyone bothered answered the poster’s question?

70 Mbps is quite slow.

These days, you are quite correct. Just shows how quickly things change. I remember when I thought our 6Mbps DSL connection was fast, lol. Then AT&T advised us they were eliminating that service, and gave us a free upgrade to 100Mbps. Running a speed test showed we were actually at about 120 to 130Mbps.

Funny note. I had to run the speed test on my cel phone, because our laptops are so old they only showed about 35Mbps.

Naw, the WiFi adapters he’s looking at are < $5 on eBay. I can’t imagine that they will work worth a sh*t, but they’re cheap...

Yes, several of us have. The problem is that the OP provided insufficient info in the initial post. I believe that the question has been answered ad nauseam now.

I’m guessing but since you need a wifi adapter, I’m sensing your computers don’t have wifi built in, which means they are probably somewhat old....

My son just built himself a gaming desktop in October is 2019, and the motherboard didn't have WiFi built in. So we bought a little USB WiFi unit for it. Some are just built that way. We just ran Ethernet to his room a couple of weeks ago. He's much happier now.

Its been answered.

He’s more or less been asking about Merdez-Benz, Jaguar and Landrover but only has a Chevy Sonic budget ($5 ebay). Good grief!

Here are some wifi and bluetooth adapters.
I have both for my desktop pc. Win10 probably has the driver, and for win7 you download from the makers website the driver.

“At most my speed from Xfinity is 70mbs via ethernet cable.” Are you using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling? I would think you should get a better speed than that.

CAT5e cable from the router to my desktop that I am using right now. The fastest I ever get with this is 75mbps but I am paying Xfinity for only a 75mbps internet connection. Not for any higher speed. I don't have a home network setup. My laptops and desktop connect to my router independently. My laptops via wifi. Desktop via ethernet cable.
