Is Spectrum Blocking Parler.com?
http://parler.com ^ | 4/8/2021 | Vanity

Posted on 04/08/2021 5:31:34 AM PDT by JstABrdPstr

Sorry for the vanity, but I have been watching the news on this for a week and have not seen an article.

I noticed at some point last week that I can not longer get to Parler.com while at home. It does not connect on my computer, or on either of my two phones while using my home wi-fi.

When I connect to a VPN on either phone (I have a work and personal cell phone), or if I use cellular data Parler.com and the Parler app work just fine.

The error I get is "server not found".

Has anyone else experienced this, or could someone with Spectrum test and see if it just me or if Spectrum is trying to cancel Parler.

Are you using the default DNS? If so, see if your DNS can resolve the domain name. If it can’t, you may have to put the IP in your hosts file. It’s 216.246.208.249

To follow up on Proxy_user’s comment:

In Windows, type Command in the search box to open a console window.

Type Ping Parler.com

See what happens, report back.

Is Spectrum Blocking Parler.com?

I don't know about Spectrum, but I strongly believe that Firefox/Mozilla does. It would come up on that browser, but comes up quickly on MS Edge.

Parler has had some certificate name issues for a while now. FF may be blocking it, or your malware detection (antivirus) may be blocking it as well.

If so, you should get a warning message and (most) antivirus programs will allow you to ignore the warning and continue to the site.

If you’re not getting any warning and instead, the browser just refuses to connect, delete all the cookies for that domain, restart your browser and attempt to connect again.

DNS issue here. Using OpenDNS for DNS filtering, not Spectrums servers.

Possible, but my professional opinion is DNS.

A best practice everyone should adopt for all their traffic, IMO. OpenDNS is good. I use Cloudfare 1.1.1.1 because it’s easy. Whatever you choose, it’s best to avoid the prying eyes and caching of your service provider.

Truth.

OpenDNS is free for home use and easy to set up. Rather than instituting obtrusive parental controls on my kids devices, I just block certain things via DNS.

There are ways around it, but my kids seem well adjusted and I haven’t caught them doing anything too questionable.

I don’t leash my kids. But I have one that still needs the bumpers up when she bowls... so... Yeah...

websites can be deplatformed, ddos’d, and/or have their domain name removed

a proper solution will require the ability to defend against these attacks
