Over the pandemic period with lots of extra downtime on my hands I’ve taken to watching just about every documentary and fictionalized program about the mafia and the drug cartels around the world from the USA to Africa to Mexico and Colombia and beyond.

They are difficult, but not unstoppable. We just lack the will.

If you draw a comparison to the cartels of Colombia in the 1980’s and 1990s, they do have the potential (and may already have in place) a 5th column that could wreak havoc if we take more effective means to stop them. Which is no different tactically than what the mobsters of the 1920s did here in the USA. Just a different national origin, greater numbers, and more efficient and deadlier weapons.

The cartels plow billions into banks.
Then the banks buy politicians in DC and Mexico City.
And last, the politicians ensure that cartel leaders are never bombed by F-18s like Al Qeida leaders.

And can we please stop talking about cartels as drug cartels? The humans are what they are smuggling. This year alone they will make 3 to 5 billion smuggling people at 3 -5 thousand dollars a pop.
