A pandemic experiment in criminal justice reform takes hold in one of America's most violent cities.
A year ago, as the coronavirus began to spread across Maryland, Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby stopped prosecuting drug possession, prostitution, minor traffic violations and other low-level offenses, a move aimed at curbing Covid-19's spread behind bars.
That shift — repeated by prosecutors in many other cities — didn’t just reduce jail populations. In Baltimore, nearly all categories of crime have since declined, confirming to Mosby what she and criminal justice experts have argued for years: Crackdowns on quality-of-life crimes are not necessary for stopping more serious crime.
On Friday, Mosby announced that she was making her pandemic experiment permanent, saying Baltimore — for decades notorious for runaway violence and rough policing — had become a case study in criminal justice reform.
In the 12 months since she ordered scaled-back enforcement, violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent, she said. Homicides inched down, though Baltimore still has one of the highest homicide rates among cities nationwide. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found sharp reductions in calls to police complaining about drugs and prostitution, she said.MORE AT LINK
Should do wonders for the peace and tranquility of the rest of the population. But they absolutely deserve the hell that’s about to descend on them.
Maybe there's some high tech companies stupid enough to 'read the city crime stats' and not do triple checks to find where democrats running the places are lying and cheating.
Maybe there's some high tech companies stupid enough to 'read the city crime stats' and not do triple checks to find where democrats running the places are lying and cheating. In which case they deserve what they get and each other...
Why should any city shut down its main industry?
This isn’t going to stop in Baltimore. It’s going to go nationwide.
Forget pot. We’ll go to Baltimore for legal heroin and cocaine.
In the 12 months since she ordered scaled-back enforcement, violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent!
She is a miracle worker.
Replace Xiden and Camel Toes with her to save America and the world.
Not my problem. In fact, I’ll just go ahead and say it. I like this. I like sanctuary cities. And I base that on the assumption that most of the garbage people in my country are aware of these protections and migrate to those areas, where they can live their lawless lives, away from where I live.
Kind of how a strip of flypaper works. Sorry, not sorry!
Thanks toamericas.best.days... for the above reality.
you have a point.....gather all the idiots under one roof.....
Double plus good comrade. The boot factory even beat their mandatory quota of boot production. Life is good.
And the ensuing peace will draw in thousands of new residents from the suburbs.
It’s just like graduation rates in inner city (black) schools. Lower the standards and EVERYONE is a winner. Remember that one school where every student had straight As and got accepted to prestigious colleges only to find out they were illiterate?
Baltimore needs to change it’s name to Dodge City pre Earp days ensue.
I think we Mosby aware of this. We already are.😉
Mosby true!
Mostly peaceful. Yep.
Next edict; Baltimore will no longer prosecute corrupt officials.
Kimberly Klacik warned the people of Baltimore in a very direct, powerful message, that continuing to vote Democrat was a vote to accept the continued destruction of their city. By a margin of 71.6 to 28, the idiots chose to remain mired in the filth and squalor of the Democrat plantation. Decisions have consequences. I have no sympathy for anyone in that asylum.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Could it be that tyrannical COVID hysteria manages to keep some more of the thugs inside?
There goes your decline. It wasn’t until the riots all over caterwauling about BLM that crime started going up again and the killings definitely started going up.
