Candles can be used on the International Space Station in case of emergency — not for light, but for oxygen. They’re not made of wax, though. The “candles” are made of potassium perchlorate, a salt compound. Once lit, the salt breaks down into its component parts, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. Per Space.com, “one candle is one day’s worth of oxygen for one crewmember.”

The OBA (Oxygen Breathing Apparatus) that fire departments (and the Navy) before SCBA operate on a similar principle.
After donning the rig, you had to pull a pin that would ignite a candle that would start the oxygen generation process. The can holding the chemicals would get pretty hot during use....
Oxygen slide..
How incredibly fascinating about those potassium perchlorate “candles”. One candle per person per day. I’ve always wondered about running out of oxygen up there. Good to know. I’m still not interested in heading to Mars.. but good to know.
