I was under the impression that Covid was actually a cold virus rather than an influenza virus. That said, it really seems like they will tag any new cold or flu virus as something to which we should be deathly afraid, and therefore we should wear masks until the end of time. This is not normal.

There is no specific 'cold' virus. Colds have many different causes, including coronaviri, rhinoviri, RSV, adenoviri, parainflueza, as well as tons of other unidentified viri. None of these are 'the flu', which is a different virus, influenza.

'Covid' is not a virus - it's a shortened version of 'COrona VIrus Disease', namely the disease you get from the virus.
