Ontario woman says she's traumatized by new car that randomly slams on the brakes

TORONTO -- An Ontario driver said she's been left traumatized and fearing for her safety after her Hyundai SUV randomly slammed on the brakes on its own multiple times.

Unionville resident Erica Mesa spent $47,000 on a new Hyundai Tucson in July 2019 and had no issues with the vehicle until three months later when she was driving to Blue Mountain in Collingwood.

The 25-year-old said she was driving on the highway with four other people when a light came on falsely indicating she was in danger of a front-end collision. Seconds later, the brakes slammed on and the vehicle came to a sudden halt, she said.

Shaken up, Mesa said she continued driving but later that week brought the car into a Hyundai dealership. She said she was told by mechanics that something might have temporarily blocked a safety sensor in the car that is used to avoid collisions.

Mesa said she was told the issue would not happen again and she could continue driving it.

The issue has happened four times now, Mesa says, and although Hyundai told CTV News Toronto her car has been repaired, she still feels it's unsafe.

The second time it happened was two months following the initial incident. (snip)

Mesa said she has been left so traumatized by the ordeal that driving the car isn't an option for her anymore. She doesn't trust that fixing the inhibitor switch for the second time will solve the problem and said it isn't worth risking her life.

She wants her money back from Hyundai Canada and claims they aren't taking her issue seriously. Hyundai Canada will allow her to trade-in the car for $21,000 but will not refund her, she said.

Plus, in recent years, car makers have turned to soy-based wiring insulation in their effort to go “green.” This insulation can be an irresistible treat for rats, mice, squirrels, and even rabbits. Lots of drivers have found their cars are dead because the rodents have eaten all the insulation. The issue is so widespread now that several class-action lawsuits have been filed against automakers with big cases against Honda and Toyota.

I have been driving for 48 years and have racked up well over a million miles, and every time my cars’ brakes have been engaged, they have been engaged the old-fashioned way. Works for me.

This is horrible PR, exactly the sort of story that will reduce Hyundai sales.

I can't believe that Hyundai didn't just pay her off.

Brakes? That's what downshifting is for.

Seriously though, I've had the sensors trigger the anti-lock brakes on the simplest of wet striping in a turn and it does nothing but annoy me. It's certainly not protecting me.

” (When blacks riot, neighbourhoods and cities burn. When whites riot, nations and continents burn.) “

Oh, really?

Seriously?

When Marxists are in control, the people they control die in the hundreds of millions from their direct actions.

On purpose.

And you’re a Marxist.

Shame on you.

” Clean the sensor “

No, silly, you have to tap the dial on the dashboard really hard. I know, cause I seen it in that China Syndrome movie. It has to be true, it was Michael Douglas done it. Went right back the way it was supposed to be.

It happened to me. A groundhog ate the wires off my transmission, lol. My ace mechanic and me went to the junk yard and got a new connector, old one was sealed with something. We had to do some troubleshooting before that. Hottest day of the year.

And, by the way, you should find out from people who were there and lived through it, what life was like in the DEFUNCT Soviet Union for black people, and what life is like in Communist China or North Korea for anyone of a different ethnicity, nationality, or, God forbid, religious belief of any kind other than worshiping Marxist Materialism.

I’ll give you a clue: It sucked.

Really, really badly.

$47k for a High ‘n Dry???

Seems I frequently get stuck behind some woman that keeps hitting her brakes for no visible reason. Having the damn brake light keep flashing while trying to keep track of other traffic is maddening.

Used to assume it was one of those automatic trans drivers that had left foot on the brake, and right on the gas, operating them like one of those old kiddie cars where you pedal push to get moving.

Lots of folks here seem to have this idea that technology is so infallible, that it must be the lady driving the car that’s at fault. You’ve got to be kidding. I rent a lot of cars so I’m always driving new ones and I’ve encountered all kinds of issues that seem to fall under that category of ‘automatic and electronic features that seem to have a mind of their own’....

The worst one I ever had (can’t remember the car but it was a GM product) was a case where the engine just conked out totally about one out of every five times when three things happened simultaneously.. the gas pedal was pushed hard to the floor, the left signal light was on and the car was being turned left. Imagine turning left thinking you had tons of time to turn before the oncoming vehicles are on you.... then realize your car was dead.

Ontario drivers are nearly as bad as Utahns.

Speak for yourself—not every Ontarian hails from the GTA.

It’s not tailgating if it is local custom. That said, the car and Toronto may not be a good combination.

Toronto is awful, but when you are the third largest metro area in North America, other places can mind their own business. If you don’t like the traffic, move or take the TTC.

Personally, I find Montreal worse. The lanes are narrower and exits on the left as well as the right and the drivers are more aggressive. But again, local custom, and Montreal places fifth.

Headline: Woman in Canada Has Car Problems.

It is CTV. Slow news day in Canada.

We had 10 students stage an anti-Mask demonstration in the middle of nowhere (four hours north of the GTA) and they ended up making national news—including being picked up by outfits out of province.
