I seem to recall in ancient history when the French wouldn’t let us do a flyover or something like that associated with hitting Libya in the 80s. One of the calls was to stop calling French fries French and instead call them freedom fries.

I thought it was more recent under W when France wouldn't go into Iraq and we sort of banned all things French and the name "Freedom Fries" was born.

The Wiki isnt correct, a lie of omission. The idea to rename French things was a “really great idea” because there were those who remembered it being done during WWI and WWII to everything German. See “Liberty Cabbage”
