Then you want your two grandsons (or daughters) to be proficient too. They have to practice, practice, practice.
You need several thousand rounds reserved just for future training.
Then you need a minimum of 1,000 rounds per weapon for when white supremacists attack people in your neighborhood.
I have some 12.7x99 from 1944 last time I used any - a couple of years ago - no misfires though I’m told that the rounds will not have as much speed as current manufacture

There is no such thing as too much ammo!
It is never enough ammo because All citizens should have enough ammo/firearms/etc. for a sustained and prolonged war, so that means a Neverending supply of ammo.
My general reply is if you have room and the extra money it never hurts to pick up a little more.
Seriously! I reload and still every time I am at a store where I can pick another bos I do. (Depending on how much they are gouging.)
The questions you need to ask yourself is:
1) How much am I going to shoot in practice and maybe competition.
2) What am I preparing for?
3) How many people may be relying on your supply?
I know a lot of people that say they are preparing for SHTF situations. That is good to a point but if you have to bug out you can only carry so much ammo and any you leave behind will be in the oppisite sides posession.
On the other hane you need enough to get you out and away.
Hard choice so again if you have room and money pick up some any tine you can.
Not having problems getting ammo if you’re on the ball. Picked up 600 5.56 today.

From what I have read online and watched on yucktube the most logical approach I have found is
Stop range practice - save every round for defence, a new scope, three rounds should be enough to sight in, or use a laser fitted bore shell to sight.
Buy Any primers you can get - without primers and cart. cases you just have a metal stick - barter with primers your firearms do Not use in reloads.
Buy any Powder you can get - Barter powders you do not use in your firearms.
Cartridge cases, you may call them shells, but in fact an artillary or mortar cartridge is called a Shell, bullet casings are called Cartridges.
Buy any type of projectile you can get, - barter for what your reloads do not use.
Buy a hand loader with extra wearable attachments as well as a bench loader, the latter is if you have got a supply of the above to re manufacture rounds . - The hand loader is portable.
Do Not barter bulk rounds and never barter alone, watch for those who you cannot see, and watch for those who will setup buys as a ambush scenario.
Be advised that you can expect assaults any time day or night, the darker the night the most likely a fire lit assault will be done, times around 04:00 are popular
Check to see if your front of house or back of house is blinding during sunrise or sunset, those also are perfect times. BTW, Buy some Welding goggles, with the ability to add lenses to them. Not perfect but if you got to face the sun and see then these will save your life.
Now the fun stuff, think in three layers with all the supplies you have, firstly if your in a clad sided house and you want to do a stand-off, then at least get some cheap clear window tint that is put on both inside and outside of the windows, stops or reduces glass fragment spray.
In front of windows of house use stealth protection placements, stealth is that you know what they are and mr and mrs karen and keven think they are really nice green planters
Make them 2 foot wider than the window they are in front of and 2 foot to top of “flower box” make out of pallets, then paint, make bottom sturdy as your going to fill with small stone or sand to about 7 inches from top then lay in cut pallet boards on top of the lower filled area. then repeat the upper board covered section with sand only, then lastly a layer of topsoil or garden mix, but your only going to plant small tiny cheap flowers etc in the the very top, that is really just for decoration.
You now have heavy duty stealth shielding in front of your window areas that will give you at least 2 feet of shielding from floor to your back.
Don’t follow the movies, you stand at the side of a timber sheeted or clad home and your going to be ventilated.
Never stand up during action or for the next hour afterwards, and always watch the rear and side windows and sliding or any type of ornamental doors, if your defending the front they are a smart as you, they will come at you fro the rear or sides.
The hour afterwards allows the silly people to go away as your a tough a target or they lost more than they can replace in fighters. BUT, again they think smart and will wait for you to stand up as you see them seem to move off and zip, the snipers they left to take out stragglers just did.
Also after an Hour, if they propose to return then that is about a fair enough time lapsed before a second hit on your home.
Learn that all you have stored is immobile, all your life’s work, everything, anything, get into talking with your family about the fact that it is wiser to get the heck out of dodge than to try and save the TV and the new double bed.
Plan to evacuate, more times than enough I have listened to those who are going to defend the castle, ok, double brick wall construction? Shelter flower boxes setup? Inserted 2 or 3 sheets of thin steel sheeting into doors?
Have fire suppression gear that can drench and fog the surrounds of your house, all buried and run from generator in secure garage? etc etc etc.
Garage, if your going to be hit by anyone smart they will ram run at the garage door, then they have entrance.
Look at getting a couple of 4ft when pulled up bollard poles cut into garage floor just behind door (1 every 4 feet), the pull up type, with an I beam steel insert with concrete fill surround, at least 6 to 8 inches round and they slide into a nice tube in the hole in the floor with at least 2/3 their length still in hole when they are set into position to stop ingress.
Sand is the cheapest fire stopper when water is not available. got buckets of sand and baking soda mixed in... you got a manual by hand fire stopper.
Read and watch some videos on current and historic urban warfare house to house, see what is happening, what is damaged, what is destroyed then look and see if you can replicate the areas you see still standing, then you going to have a better chance.

Ammo and rifles and pistols out the backside, then you loose what you got. In storage buried in places around the yard at least you have something to come back to and restock.
If you have not mapped and walked your egress areas and looked seriously at how safe it would be to travel through those areas at night, or during the day, then that is Not good planning.
If you can get out by car, have you mapped a way to do it, old dirt side roads, old construction roads, service roads? Parks etc, list is long. Never travel during the day, never stand upright when resting or travelling if during daylight or moon lit nights. travel only during just before dawn and just after dusk, This will Not be a picnic.
Mountain bikes, the cheap ones, shall be the fastest and quietest egress and travel transport you shall ever have in a SHTF scenario.
Buy dimmable battery operated LED lights, RED, then turn off the lights and start teaching the family how to move about on all fours and to belly crawl, think I am joking ;-) you have not been reading the reply have you, lol.

At some point, though, it may become a question of whether one has the
time for enough trigger pulls to wear your gun out, so the math changes
to how many rounds can YOU get off before YOU are worn out... ;-)

The answer is more, of course. I refuse to buy ammo at their current hyper inflated prices. If people stop paying the inflated prices, they WILL come down.
