The missing ice could have been blasted into space when the asteroid/comet hit the icesheet and endedthe last ice age...they really are guessing, and have nothing but 19th
century theories to base any studies on.

The 10,800 BC comet strike does explain that conundrum. I forget the particulars, but the one mile dia rocks coming in at a certain angle and speed suck the cold of space down to ground level, (I may be recalling this wrong). Also this rain of rocks lasted over 100 years, with most of the big ones coming in at the onset.
