I stopped playing golf years ago because it did havoc on my back. I'm generally a very healthy person but when I was playing golf, I would occasionally get back pains so bad that I could barely stand up from a sitting or lying position. The pain was excruciating.

I never got surgery but I gave up golf and instead went on daily walks. I try to get 3-5 miles a day of walking in. I haven't had back pain since and walking seems to really help with your back.

I wonder how many other pro golfers (besides Tiger) has chronic back pain.

Jack Nicholas and Fred Couples come to mind, both have chronic back problems that hindered their later careers. Nicholas I know needed back surgery at one time!

It was probably the last 15 years of employment that I had chronic low back pain and I now blame it on spending every day seated at a desk, interspersed with some athletic activity such as racquetball and softball.

Following my retirement in 2016 and becoming fully active in softball and other athletics, my back pain has disappeared and I've never felt better......go figure.

Yes, a lot folks really have spastic motion in the golf swing and it will ruin their back. Usually it’s a matter of moving the spine laterally and up and down while flapping your arms ending with a reverse pivot. If the spine is kept in a fixed position and you just rotate your shoulders around it, not much will happen to your back unless you’re aggressive as hell hitting 1000 balls a day like tiger did for decades.
