‘ I stopped playing golf years ago because it did havoc on my back. I’m generally a very healthy person but when I was playing golf, I would occasionally get back pains so bad that I could barely stand up from a sitting or lying position. The pain was excruciating.
I never got surgery but I gave up golf and instead went on daily walks. I try to get 3-5 miles a day of walking in. I haven’t had back pain since and walking seems to really help with your back.

I wonder how many other pro golfers (besides Tiger) has chronic back pain’

Yes, a lot folks really have spastic motion in the golf swing and it will ruin their back. Usually it’s a matter of moving the spine laterally and up and down while flapping your arms ending with a reverse pivot. If the spine is kept in a fixed position and you just rotate your shoulders around it, not much will happen to your back unless you’re aggressive as hell hitting 1000 balls a day like tiger did for decades.

Fred Couples
Not sure how or why he’s still playing but he’s had severe back problems for years. Think he had back fusion surgery years ago..maybe few more more since then. He’s not shy about admitting & think he even wears a brace.
You can literally see him grimace when he bends down to pickup ball.
Love Freddy, one of my favorite players

I could crank the ball about 300 years in my twenties and early thirties, if I wanted too. But the swing was so aggressive, accuracy was sacrificed.

I’m about 5’8, and credit the distance to my flexibility and the power in my legs. And technique, a perfect draw with a great top spin.

Being smaller, it was fun out driving everyone I golfed with. For a while, my golf buddies called me Tiger. Many times I hit par five greens in two strokes. Moon shots with the irons.

Now, I just thank god can play, hit it 250 down the middle and concentrate on the score. If the temp gets down under 60, my back will cramp.
