Yes, in my small town we had operators placing calls for most the time I was a kid.
If you knew the operator, you would end up having a conversation with them before they connected you. Most of the times you didn't could just tell them to put you through to the other person's name without using the number. And the operator would listen in to the calls, as would other people on the party line.
Good memories, of a simpler time, gub.
Iโve only heard the stories, and have seen it in movies.

This is the People’s House. Not Pelosi’s House.
She is scared of losing power, and that is why she is trying to steal the #IA02 Congressional seat won fairly by @RepMMM.

I’ve been pondering...where I lived back when party lines were a thing, was outside a military base. We might have had a party line but I didn’t use the phone, and my mother is deceased so I can’t ask, but I wonder if maybe we didn’t have party lines so people couldn’t overhear any type of military info. Loose lips sink ships, and all that. Fort Bragg is home of the 82nd Airborne.
When I was 18, I was a telephone operator. Each morning at 7:00 am Teresa, a lady with disabilities, would call to say good morning. She would say “hello, oper?” We all looked forward to her morning calls. Good memories.
