Yes, in my small town we had operators placing calls for most the time I was a kid.
If you knew the operator, you would end up having a conversation with them before they connected you. Most of the times you didn't could just tell them to put you through to the other person's name without using the number. And the operator would listen in to the calls, as would other people on the party line.
