When I was a kid I used to go see the “hardtops” race at the county fairground. They looked like dune buggies with a wing assembly on top.

The very same! But back then they were more . . . utilitarian, no chrome, elaborate exhaust pipes, etc., unless they were lurking under all the dust and mud. Mostly I remember the deafening noise. It may be to blame for my tinnitus today, a half century later.
