The British Empire outlawed slavery and after doing so acted to exterminate it.
The Muslims in Africa, however, were stubborn about holding on to the practice.
“The British Empire outlawed slavery and after doing so acted to exterminate it.”
This is a false statement, in this context. We’re talking about 1776 and prior.
Even Britain’s deeply leftist papers have noted that the Empire was all-in on slavery until well into the 1820’s.
=========Contrary to our view of history, pro-slavery thinking in the 1820s and 30s was the norm, from politicians to monarchs==========
We’d better find some habitable planets in the universe soon.
Planet Earth is dying of victimhood. Terminal victims need a new planet to ruin.
The British Empire outlawed slavery BEFORE the United States did. I don't know where OP is going with this. Western Civilization (led by the UK) deserves immense credit for the global effort to eradicate slavery. Other civilizations didn't want to end slavery -- some still practice it.
And how about holding Africans responsible? Who rounded up and sold subordinate tribes to the British and Arabs after all? They are as involved as anybody if we are pointing fingers.
Kinda. What the Brits did was stop work to stop the African transatlantic slave trade. They had no problem using coolies who were no better than slaves.
It was an economic move by the Brits, not a human right move.
I love Wilberforce and the English abolitionists, but the British Empire was not quite as enlightened as they claimed relative to other powers.
