To: Diana in Wisconsin

So, here’s what I learned about the invasive Barberry; some are sterile by nature. Same with Nandina: certain varieties are sterile. (Maybe that’s why certain Barberry is used here in Georgia.) I was going to use Red Rocket, but think I’ll go with Orange Rocket.

It appears that the Korean strains are the ones that can cause problems.

The last year I worked for Jung’s we carried only a few varieties in the Nursery, so even back then they were starting to take it seriously.

Just check with your local DNR. If it’s not considered invasive, plant what you want where you are. :)

Or, better yet, start a program to ban the ugly, prickly shrubs in your state, LOL!
