With everyone coming to Texas I should move back to Long Island
Note, in general TX and SC are about a wash climate wise.
We live in Tarrant County (Fort Worth) and like the proximity to DFW International Airport but it seems to slowly be turning blue, We’ve always been interested in the East Texas Piney Woods area which includes Texas’ 1st congressional district, home of Louie Gohmert:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas%27s_1st_congressional_district
I’ve lived in both - of the two, I preferred Texas.
.
In SC, if you’re a Yankee, like I was coming from New England, I would suggest one live in the more suburban areas. I lived more rurally - we were reminded of our ‘foreign’ status almost daily and my kids were hazed by adults on the soccer field. I moved as soon as I could. (and this was in the early 2000s)
.
In Texas, you are respected, left to yourself and I was NEVER denigrated for being from the North - I was thanked for joining my community and church!
While there, I was a member of the state’s militia, the Texas State Guard just after Hurricane Harvey. A fascinating volunteer force and EVERY state needs one like it.
.
So why don’t I still live there? Rt I-35, the north-south corridor is INSANE to drive on and my wife and daughters refused to drive there at all.
(Note also that car insurance is more expensive in TX thanks to the unlicensed and uninsured population streaming from the South)
.
We are near Tulsa, OK now - Cooler weather than south Texas, but being from New England, no big deal. (MUCH less snow) We have income taxes here, but the pace and the lower cost of EVERYTHING is very, very nice indeed!
.
Hope this perspective helps and blessings on your move!
Both states will be blue soon enough. So the politics won’t matter.
I would go for SC. Texas is too hot for my blood. I don’t moss Texas summers.
Marble Falls, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville are all nice and within 1-2 hours of Austin or San Antonio. Johnson City, Blanco, and Burnet are nice as well, but they are all smaller (if that matters).
If I had to pick from all of those, I’d pick Marble Falls because of the gorgeous views...
Unfortunately, Texas is full. Enjoy SC.
I recommend the North Myrtle Beach area in SC. Good roads. Close to all conveniences. Not urban. Beautiful beaches. Generally conservative and God-fearing. Lots of recreational facilities. Affordable housing stock, but you’d better hurry.
Coming into Texas from California I got off the 10 fwy and drove along Hwy 29 to Georgetown. It’s a beautiful stretch of road, full of quaint towns, and Georgetown itself is a very nice area. I settled about a half hour south of there down the 130, but would love to live there.
We moved from Ohio to South Carolina going on four years ago. We live in the Bluffton area about fifteen miles west of Hilton Head and the coast. Twenty miles from Savannah, and the Savannah airport and about eighty five miles from Charleston. Bluffton has good schools and many private schools. The weather is interesting. This is the coolest winter since we have lived here. Thirties in the am and warming into 50’s and 60’s. Last winter was almost nonexistent. From mid September through May, it is beautiful. June through September is horrible hot and humid and bugs. But when it clears out in September it is glorious. We think groceries, dining is expensive here.
Born in Texas, love Texas and family my is here but given my druthers— South Carolina.
I absolutely love South Carolina and the people, the noseeums are a drawback ha! (I lived in the lowcountry).
Check out McKinney Texas. Nice suburb north of big D. If you want desert, hot, no water, no trees, then Midland,Lubbock or Amarillo would be great.
Have you considered Florida...?
I’m in the SC upstate - been here 15 years and love it. Most conservative part of the state. Get 4 seasons here and you’re under 2 hours to Charlotte and under two hours to Atlanta. But be warned, a lot of people moving in here from up north and bringing their lunacy with them. Greenville is trending purple and will be blue sooner rather than later. Personally I’m looking for land somewhere in Texas....just in case their secession efforts pan out anytime soon!
For South Carolina:
A few miles out of spartanburg is a good area.
If you really like the county, McCormick and McBee are nice.
Lancaster or York counties are good if you like big Charlotte nearby.
Texas but leave your politics at the border if they ain’t RED......stay away from big cities...they’re Blue and Ft. Worth is teetering......I wouldn’t live close to Dallas for all the tea in China....outlying areas of big cities tend to be more Conservative, rual and God-fearing. 50 years ago we were in the country but the dasterdly developers have invaded us but we’re too old to move and we’ll have to deal with it......sigh
Granbury Texas is ideal. About a 30 minute drive to Fort Worth. Small town atmosphere with big city shopping and restaurants, beautiful lake and scenery. Have friends that just bought a house there on the lake and they love it there. Very conservative. Had the best Trump boat parade ever!
If you like the SC “look” with trees, try Tyler Texas. Or the Hill Country for a cowboy vibe. DFW is good as well - but make sure to consider the far out suburbs on the north and northeast of Dallas, or the areas around (west?) of Fort Worth.
