Texas or South Carolina? Where is a good place to live?

Hi Freeps!

I need your help! Over ten years ago, I asked for some good locations in Washington State to live and you all came through and helped my family find a good place to live!

Now I'm here asking you all again. My husband and I are needing to either move to South Carolina or Texas. We just need to find a good location, not too close to any city, more rural area with good schools and hopefully more conservatives.

In Texas, we would like to live near either Dallas -Fort Worth, Amarillo, Lubbock or Midland. We just want to stay away from Austin or Huston.

In South Carolina, we really have no idea. Probably more inland away from the tourist areas.

Any help would be great, like areas to stay away from, etc.

Thank you so much!

the three largest hotbeds of Socialism in Texas are Houston, Austin and Dallas

But if you're smart, you pick an 75-85% GOP county close by and then just drive into the crazed rat zones for the big city stuff.

We live in Tarrant County (Fort Worth) and like the proximity to DFW International Airport but it seems to slowly be turning blue, We’ve always been interested in the East Texas Piney Woods area which includes Texas’ 1st congressional district, home of Louie Gohmert:

No State income tax in Texas. That should count for something. If I ever move again, the will definitely be a major consideration.

Yeah but the property and sales tax will wail on your ass bigtime. Lived in DFW for 30 years. Avoid the metroplex. Its just insane growth and too many people. Look into Tennesse as another option. Stay away from Nashville, well Davidson county. Not as hot as Texas, no income taxes

With everyone coming to Texas I should move back to Long Island

lol

I retired and seriously considering moving south from rural CT.

However, each year it seems the rest of the country is getting as wacky as CT, and the advantages of moving seem to be getting lower and lower.

Then CT eliminated the state income tax on social security which gave us one more excuse not to move.

Our small town has great conservative people and churches, we have lots of land and privacy, and the property taxes are a lot lower than most of the state--and when you are retired you can just avoid traveling when the weather is bad.

So--we have stayed and probably will stay for the rest of our lives.

For many folks it may not be the correct choice, but it works for us.

I’ve lived in both - of the two, I preferred Texas.
.
In SC, if you’re a Yankee, like I was coming from New England, I would suggest one live in the more suburban areas. I lived more rurally - we were reminded of our ‘foreign’ status almost daily and my kids were hazed by adults on the soccer field. I moved as soon as I could. (and this was in the early 2000s)
.
In Texas, you are respected, left to yourself and I was NEVER denigrated for being from the North - I was thanked for joining my community and church!
While there, I was a member of the state’s militia, the Texas State Guard just after Hurricane Harvey. A fascinating volunteer force and EVERY state needs one like it.
.
So why don’t I still live there? Rt I-35, the north-south corridor is INSANE to drive on and my wife and daughters refused to drive there at all.
(Note also that car insurance is more expensive in TX thanks to the unlicensed and uninsured population streaming from the South)
.
We are near Tulsa, OK now - Cooler weather than south Texas, but being from New England, no big deal. (MUCH less snow) We have income taxes here, but the pace and the lower cost of EVERYTHING is very, very nice indeed!
.
Hope this perspective helps and blessings on your move!

Both states will be blue soon enough. So the politics won’t matter.

I would go for SC. Texas is too hot for my blood. I don’t moss Texas summers.

Marble Falls, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville are all nice and within 1-2 hours of Austin or San Antonio. Johnson City, Blanco, and Burnet are nice as well, but they are all smaller (if that matters).

If I had to pick from all of those, I’d pick Marble Falls because of the gorgeous views...

Lot of rich people in Marble Falls, they literally have garages at their homes for their jets.

My sister lives near Columbia and I do not care for it.

It’s very dry and scrubby, and sandy.

North of there, south of NC, more in the mountains is much nicer.

I recommend the North Myrtle Beach area in SC. Good roads. Close to all conveniences. Not urban. Beautiful beaches. Generally conservative and God-fearing. Lots of recreational facilities. Affordable housing stock, but you’d better hurry.

My daughter had a teacher from Alabama. I loved her style and how she taught the class. All the children came out of that class addressing the adults with either yes ma’am or yes sir. That’s huge deal in a liberal area where I live. I loved it!

Coming into Texas from California I got off the 10 fwy and drove along Hwy 29 to Georgetown. It’s a beautiful stretch of road, full of quaint towns, and Georgetown itself is a very nice area. I settled about a half hour south of there down the 130, but would love to live there.

True, many years ago when me and a fellow Yankee (at that time) were visiting, we left some place where were getting the evil eye and attitude and as we existed the door I tuned to him and said "I think they're still kind of pissed about that whole Sherman thing."
