Marty Schottenheimer, a former long-time NFL head coach, was moved to a hospice facility near his home in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday because of complications from Alzheimers disease, his family said in a statement Wednesday given to ESPN.
The 77-year-old Schottenheimer, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014, is listed in stable condition, according to the website.
“As a family we are surrounding him with love,” Schotteheimer’s wife, Pat, said in a statement, also speaking on behalf of the couple’s children, Kristin and Brian, “and are soaking up the prayers and support from all those he impacted through his incredible life. In the way he taught us all, we are putting one foot in front of the other … one play at a time.”

God bless him. He brooked no guff from anyone. Old school, like it should be.
Marty was a fine coach. My prayers are out.
Coach for the Browns for The Drive when Elway beat them and then The Fumble the following year when Byner fumbled at the one yrd line both in AFC Championship games.
I remember watching both of them when I still loved football.
Peace be with you Marty.
Doing the math, he was diagnosed when he was 70 or 71. That is young.
Yep, another one of the NFL greats isn’t long for this world. I wonder what he thinks of today’s NFL, I doubt that he is happy with the the league of today.
Good guy... Good coach...
Son played QB for the Gators, then became an NFL Offensive Coordinator.
Aww, so sad to hear this! My prayers for him and his family!
Prayers for him.

Yep. He’s working for Urban Meyer here in Jacksonville now.
He's a QB coach/passing game coordinator for Jacksonville now.
As a life long Chiefs fan, Marty brought KC back to some winning years. Loved his defenses in the day, but hated the 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense. He did bring back excitement to The Chiefs Kingdom.
May God be with him, his family and the care givers. Hospice is hard for everyone watching your loved one slowly pass.
Oh, I’m sure not. He was probably livid over the league while he still had his faculties. And his departure from the Redskins after one season was a harbinger of things to come. He wouldn’t kowtow to Dan Snyder’s shenanigans. Snyder had to learn the long, hard way that he’s no coach or general manager, and I gave up on that team after fifty years when he punked out and dropped the name to save his skin. Ron Rivera is supposed to have autonomy over all aspects of the team, but I forsee another storm coming.
One of the top coaches in NFL history and one of the best to never win a Super Bowl. And an even greater man. His teams coming up short in the playoffs were really a testament to how great and overachieving his teams were and he never really had a top QB to put them over the top.
That is tough. Prayers for peace for Coach Marty and his family.
Yeah, Marty brought some enjoyment to KC when he was there. Oh, BTW, good luck Sunday. I boycotted football this season, but I’d like to see the Chiefs pull it out. Nostalgia, if nothing else.
I always liked him. Prayers for him tonight.
Marty is definitely a man of high integrity.
