I talked to two of the nurses there who are OLD school and who are both public health nurses with many vaccine clinics under their belts. They say it is no longer indicated. I find myself still doing it though. I am only aware of one instance of a nurse giving an IM injection and pulling back a syringe full of blood. She said it had never happened to her before that too. Bottom line, it can happen so I still do it even though hitting a vessel appears to be very rare.
