[Why did Trump fall out with Bannon in 2017?]
But it was clear from the beginning that Trump was starting move away from what he campaigned on. The disastrous 2018 mid-terms smacked Trump upside the head and got him back on the straight and narrow. That was when the real work on eliminating DACA and building the wall began.
I think Trump would have been better situated if he really had eliminated DACA on day one and required wall funding in exchange for the tax cut legislation Paul Ryan wanted. Instead, he dithered, and Biden is now president. Still, he did really well, considering the disastrous election outcomes for incumbent parties from comparable elections in 1920 and 1932.
I can’t criticize Trump, not because there weren’t failings, but because I don’t think that there is anybody who could have done a better job than he did under the conditions he was working under. There was nobody who could have done better to get things done, without bribing all the politicians and senior bureaucrats with billion dollar contracts. That’s the only way that things get done in Washington, unfortunately.
If he had done that, he would have been impeached and removed on charges of bribery.
I thought Trump should have terminated an entire department 10 to 50 thousand useless government leeches , I don’t care which one just to have sent a strong message sending power back to states or whatever. Outside the box. I think he had the mandate to do something like that if he had in first week and it would have been a super strong move to go from there. But rinos and mcmaster particularly cleansed most of political outsiders in quick order.
“Instead, he dithered, and Biden is now president.”
So you are claiming Biden won the election without election fraud?
Trump foolishly thought McConnell and Ryan were in his side. They played him for two years and then Ryan orchestrated a manufactured loss of the house to the Dems. Yes, manufactured. A bunch of safe seats were simply conceded through unexpected early retirements. Others were via mailed in campaigns. The coming “blue wave” was nowhere near what the press lied about it being and it would have been a competitive election if not for they GOP wanting to stop taking heat for blocking Trump and turning it over to the Dems so they could do it for them.
Anyway any illusion that the Congress could be an ally was dead after that and he set out to do it alone. Do it better than Ryan or McConnell would have let him, frankly.
” think Trump would have been better situated if he really had eliminated DACA on day one and required wall funding in exchange for the tax cut legislation Paul Ryan wanted. “
He did both. The courts stopped his DACA efforts and the Supreme Court found that Trump had to give a compelling reason to kill Obama’s illegal executive order. They did not accept his reason.
He did require funding for Ryans legislation, and he shut down the Government with the full support of all the GOP who wailed that the military was back to broomstick rifles and children would starve.
And the entire time he was under a threat of instant Ryan, Graham and McConnell impeachment and treated like a criminal. He realistically had about 40% of the power a President normally gets.
And don’t forget, his entire White House staff was utterly filled with leaking spies. That neutralized his ability to devise strategies and negotiation paths. Congress and the blob knew his plans 10 minutes after he gamed them out. He was basically a coach sending in plays on a radio the opposition was listening to.
