My dad was a WWII vet and VFW member. At his funeral, they gave him a 21 gun salute which I believe to be the proper protocol.
I read this a long time ago, and this is what his fellow vets gave him. I don't remember how many rifles were used (probably 7) but they all fired at once, a single volley, with a rest, followed by seven, a rest, then seven more, rest and finally six more.
