Bizarre, Twisting Skyscraper Proposed for NYC

A Turkey-based architecture firm is proposing some big changes to the New York City skyline.

The Sarcostyle Tower, designed by Hayri Atak Architectural Design, looks like no skyscraper on the face of the planet, with its curved, sloping design and sinuous curves.

“Sarcostyle” is a filament that makes up striated muscle fiber, and it’s easy to see where the building gets its name, given its anatomically inspired form.

Seesaws at U.S.-Mexico border win prestigious UK design prize According to Atak, one of the “impressive” effects of the building is “that it creates an image in the mind that is tangent to all of the other neighboring structures but does not exactly resemble them.”

It’s this foray into the uncanny that makes the design so unique.

“It has a transparent, ghostly stance in the city skyline,” Atak mused.

While there’s no plans yet to build the Sarcostyle on the Manhattan waterfront, just the renderings are enough to inspire awe.

Maybe it will be affordable to do in thirty years, when New York finally recovers.

From Al Jaffe, Mad Magazine 1974

The preceding panel had the construction foreman swat a fly with the rolled up blueprint.

How about we leave NYC alone for now.

No meddling. Especially from any country near the Middle East.

And who’s going to pay for it? Most residents have already left. Can’t blame them.

I like it too. Window washers will need to wear jetpacks though. No straight lines in the inner part.

So much unoccupied office space.

New York needs another skyscraper like a cancer patient needs more cigarettes.

I would not be taking bets that it will not start sinking before they get to the middle of construction.

I note a few things, one being the inability for the structure to “float” in top of any sort of foundation that they propose in that area so close to liquid.

The second thought was that if build they will have no end of ability to cope with jumpers as they have a huge number of balconies.

Any sort of Storm event that is critical for existing structures, flooding or seismic action will drop it in a heartbeat.

Occupation of such a structure that brings in sufficient income to cover costs to build and turn to profit is in no way going to happen in the next 50 years, if that.

You cannot build a mansion on mud.
