Wouldn’t be the same, and in ways we cannot imagine, it would have been ruined. It didn’t make him a billionaire, but Jim’s decisions have turned out to be absolutely perfect for the platform.
There is no substitute really and anytime the system is down for a day or so, I get a reminder of that fact.

I’ve sworn off all media. Don’t do Twitter anymore, Fox, Rush. Can’t seem to really get into GAB, can’t do Parler and get physically ill if I’m exposed to any “news” program. I do come to FR daily and feel I am more informed than any other non FR reading person in the country.
Most of the vanities I have posted on FR can still be found on Google, but I have to qualify in my search that the story appeared on Free Republic or the word "poconopundit" before they will show up.
However, on DuckDuckGo, I was able to find my story: President Trump & Mark Twain: Master Pilots on America's Great River at the bottom of the first page of search hits.
That's pretty good considering scores of people have probably published something comparing Mark Twain to Trump. It's a also an indicator of FR's influence in the marketplace of ideas.
Here's the DuckDuckGo search for the key words Mark Twain Trump. Now I think the answer is to have the ability on your own homepage where you can search for business information on Google or political searches on DuckDuckGo. Choice.
That's what I put together, and my homepage launches directly from my computer -- and you can do the same. It's private, meaning you don't have to go the Search Engine's website to go to your favorite sites.
Is anyone out there interested in this? If so, I'm planning to soon post details on how to accomplish that very simply.

The value of Free Republic is in its base of participants and their willingness to buy online from proven conservative vendors and to support conservative causes and organizations. I think that FR could spin off a commercial offshoot while retaining the original FR format. Participation in the commercial venture would be limited and governed by iron clad terms of service and bylaws to keep it from going rogue like Twitter, Facebook, etc. The cash generated by the commercial side would help fund FR and permit its expansion and development. Of course, no one here would want any of that or trust its implementation without Jim Robinson in charge. Contrary to the old saying, some men are in fact indispensable.

I posted a thread saying very similar things. I suggested licensing the platform for $tens of millions, like the McDonald brothers licensed their name for a franchise. No change to the original restaurant/enterprise, just a check in the mail like the founder of Duck Dynasty.
