When the conspiracy theories don't pan out, why is the first reaction of the people who believe in them something like "Whoa! This is even deeper than we thought!" rather than something like "Whoa! Conspiracy theories are nonsense and I should try critically evaluating the information presented to me in context!"?

It seems like a lot of times, the conspiracy theory faithful don't even remember that their favorite conspiracy theory from 2 months ago ever even existed. They move on, like breaking up with an ex, and without having learned anything from the experience. They're so into identifying patterns, but the one pattern they miss is that the conspiracy theories virtually NEVER turn out to be true.
