In high school choir, we used to sing the version that you hear performed by the Army or Marine Band. The second verse, the seen Him in the watch-fires verse, is sung by the women. The men sing a counter melody and today it gave me chills. It is simple. “Truth is marching, truth is marching” as they sing:
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on.
Truth is marching indeed. May God bless and keep us ready to answer.
